Rural Track Program – Grand Island, Kearney, North Platte, Scottsbluff
The University of Nebraska RTT is a program conceived and developed by the Department of Family Medicine. Based on the concept that residents tend to practice within 100 miles of where they train, a network was developed to have Family Medicine residents train at five key sites across the state of Nebraska.
Unique Features
The first year of the residency is spent in Omaha at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, integrated with the residents of the UNMC Family Medicine program, a diverse program of multiple tracks including a traditional track, urban underserved track, and an association with the United States Air Force Residency. There are certain rotations and experiences that are completed at the large academic center prior to moving to the rural site. The final 2 years are spent at 1 of 4 rural sites spread across the entire state of Nebraska. The sites include Grand Island, Kearney, North Platte, and Scottsbluff. The residents are integrated in the community and Family Medicine practices. In addition to meeting all ACGME requirements, residents are able to tailor their rotations to meet their professional goals and needs. The program has several features that make it attractive to residents planning on practicing in rural areas, particularly Nebraska, including the size of the program with up to 2 second year and up to 2 third year residents at each site. Plus, practicing in a continuity clinic in a small, underserved rural community located close to the main training site has proven beneficial to residents.
